Justice Robert Grier issues opinion in the Prize Cases

Justice Grier wrote the opinion that validated the Union’s blockade of Southern ports during the Civil War and interpreted broadly the war powers of the executive branch. Chief Justice Taney was among the dissenting justices. (By Joanne Williams)
