CHARLESTOWN, city, Middlesex** co., Mass., 1 m. N. of Boston; from W. 441 ms. Watered by Charles and Mystic rivers. It contains one of the U. S. Navy Yards, with a dry dock; also, the Massachusetts state prison, and the Bunker Hill Monument Pop. in 1840,11,484; in 1850, 17,216. (Fanning's, 1853)
