JEFFERSON COUNTY, situated on the southerly boundary of Indiana, on Ohio river. Area, 360 square miles. Face of the country hilly; soil fertile. Seat of justice, Madison. Pop. in 1820, 8,030; in 1830, 11,465; in 1840, 16,614; in 1850, 23,914. (Fanning's, 1853)
