CHITTENDEN COUNTY, situated on the western boundary of Vermont, on the east side of Lake Champlain, and traversed by Onion river. Area, 500 square miles. The face of the country is undulating near the lake, but becomes mountainous and hilly at the east; much of the soil is highly productive. Seat of justice, Burlington. Pop. in 1830, 21,775; in 1840, 22,977; in 1850, 29,036. (Fanning's, 1853)
