ESSEX COUNTY, situated at the northeast corner of Massachusetts, with the Atlantic ocean and Massachusetts bay on the east, and traversed by Merrimac river. Face of the country hilly; soil of middling quality. Seats of justice, Ipswich, Salem, and Newburyport. Pop. in 1810, 71,883; in 1820, 74,655; in 1830, 82,887; in 1840, 94,987; in 1850, 131,300.
