HANCOCK COUNTY, situated in the southerly part of Mississippi, with Pearl river on the west and Gulf of Mexico on the south. Area, 1,680 square miles. Face of the country diversified; soil generally barren, and covered with pines. Seat of justice, Shieldsborough. Pop. in 1830, 1,961; in 1840, 3,367; in 1850, 3,672. (Fanning's, 1853)
