STOKES COUNTY, situated on the north boundary of North Carolina, and traversed by Dan and Yadkin rivers. Area, 836 square miles. Face of the country, hilly. Seat of justice, Germantown. Pop. in 1810, 11,645; in 1820, 14,033; in 1830, 16,196; in 1840, 16,265; in 1850, 9,206. (Fanning's, 1853)
