John T. Cuddy to John H. Cuddy, July 8, 1862 (Page 1)
In late June of 1862 John Taylor Cuddy and the 36th Pennsylvania fought in the battle at Gaines' Mill as part of the Union defense of Washington, DC. Although Cuddy described the harsh struggle of fighting a war in this letter to his parents, he also wrote with continued determination: "we have seen harde times but we are giting along as well as ever." (By Rebecca Solnit)
