In Washington, the capital's Catholic congregations donate in aid of the Pope and his troubles in Italy

Pope Pius IX, detail
In Washington DC, all the Catholic Churches dedicated their day of worship "to the spiritual and temporal aid" of Pope Pius IX.  The Papal States were at the time under heavy pressure from Italian nationalism and the Church was seen as being in crisis.  Both attendance and collections were reported as significant.  (By John Osborne)
