Monday, July 13-The rebels are in possession of our old home at Carlisle. I suppose I shall get no more rents from that quarter this year. Eight years ago, in that very house in Carlisle, I told my wife that it would be an unsafe residence in case of the outbreak of civil war, which was sure to come some day, and that therefore we should leave it. We did leave it. Many laughed then at the idea of civil war, but we upon the border knew better.
