ANOTHER FAILURE – Failing, just now, is an epidemic; although Yankees, as a general thing, profess to know no such word as failure, yet, even as Yankees, there are a few sporadic cases of no-success in their various undertakings. One of the last announced failures is that of the attempt to establish a “Metropolitan journal” on the new-York plan in Boston. To accomplish this grand result three daily papers were compressed into one, and the Traveller, in a quarto form, was to be a metropolitan newspaper in the capital of New-England. But the experiment has not succeeded. Mr. Bowles, the editor-in-chief, announces his withdrawal from the concern, alleging as a reason that “The expectations under which he was induced to take the editorship of the Traveller were not likely to be realized.”

The failure to establish a metropolitan journal in Boston reflects no discredit on the ability of the editor. There was one very essential ingredient omitted in undertaking the enterprise: that excellent hint of the renowned Mrs. GLASSE, whose prudential maxim in relation to the making of hare soup has rendered her immortal – first catch your hare, is as applicable to newspapers as to culinary exploitations. In establishing a metropolitan journal, first catch your metropolis. But this maxim our Boston friends neglected, and hence their failure. A metropolitan journal can be published only in a metropolis, and Boston can hardly aspire to that character while New-York is so near, yet so far ahead in population and wealth. The Traveller will still continue to be published, but without making any such pretensions as those with which it commenced its metropolitan career.
