This action, in which U.S. naval raiders in boats under the cover of darkness attacked Confederate shipping and installations on the Virginia coast, was typical of the small and traditional so-called "cutting-out" naval expeditions being carried out with some frequency by the ships of the blockading United States forces along the Atlantic coast and in the Gulf of Mexico in 1861.
