The following text is presented here in complete form, as it originally appeared in print. Spelling and typographical errors have been preserved as in the original.

“Old Brown.” – According to the Albany Statesman, “Old Brown” has helped the Republicans “fifty thousand votes in the State,” which statement, if it is a fact, is not very complimentary to the intelligence of the State. With a good many persons, however, “the irrepressible conflict” is popular. It is safe enough to fight the South at the North, but not so safe when Mason & Dixon’s line is crossed with long spears and Sharpe’s rifles. – N. Y. Express.

We gather from the tone of other New York papers, that the Harper’s Ferry affair has had such an unexpected and most disastrous result; and the reason assigned for it is, that the Southern Democratic papers have been bent on making political capital out of the matter, and have unjustly charged the whole Republican party with complicity in Brown’s foray. The party has resented the charge, and thus that which might have tended to heal the sectional breach, has, it is to be feared, widened it.
