Samuel Elliot was a member of the 36th Regiment 7th Pennsylvania Volunteer Corps in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was captured during the Battle of Wilderness on May 5-7, 1864 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Elliot’s prison diary entry on May 22, 1864 described his arrival at Andersonville Prison in Georgia and the dismal conditions that turned strong men into “walking skeletons.” (By Brenna McKelvey)
