Edward Everett to Abraham Lincoln, November 20, 1863

Edward Everett, engraving, detail
Edward Everett had delivered his lengthy speech the previous day at the Gettysburg dedication of the new Soldier's Cemetery, just before President Lincoln delivered his 373 word "dedicatory remarks." Everett's gracious note passes along high praise for Lincoln's performance and also thanks the president for arranging that Everett's daughter be permitted a seat on the speaker's platform.
