Thousands of African-American citizens in Washington D.C. celebrate the anniversary of their emancipation

The fourth annivesary of the emancipation in the District of Columbia saw African-American parades and a short speech from President Johnson outside the White House.  Up to 5000 men marched in parade, including U.S. Colored Troops regiments, and tens of thousands of people of color lined the streets. Prominent figures gave speeches and banners demanded the next step of black manhood suffrage.  (By John Osborne)
