Face of the country, diversified and picturesque; soil, well watered and generally fertile. Seats of justice, Salem and Sandy Hill. Pop. in 1810, 36,3724; in 1820, 38,831; in 1830, 42,635; in 1840, 41,080; in 1850, 44,750.
