Burton, Lemuel

Lemuel Burton was born in New Jersey around 1843 and served in the 43rd United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. According to his service records, Burton worked as a laborer before he joined Company G of the 43rd USCT on April 13, 1864 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While outside Petersburg on July 30, 1864, Burton was wounded during an engagement. Burton was transferred to a hospital in City Point, Virginia, but he died on August 5, 1864. (By Don Sailer)
