    Dr Sir.

In addition to the number of troops, that have been raised in this state, and not included in the account rendered by Genl. Mather or Gov Yates, we know that Col. Bayles: Seven Companies of Col. Stephensons and six of Col ... regiment are entirely from this state; of companies not included in the above, there is one from McLean, one from Pike, one from Calhoun, one from Greene, one from Jersey, within my own knowledge. All these are in Missouri; beside these then many squads, and single men that went to St Louis, because they could not be admitted in this state.

It is lamentable, nevertheless true, that there are very few fighting Union men in Mo. that are not Germans. We want a head, a general, an Illinoisan, and trust that one may be appointed. From appearances Illinois and Indiana must fight the battle of the Valley, if is it ever is fought, and we insist that something is due in this respect to this state.

Mr Butler, can tell you of the feeling growing up, and which is rapidly on the increase, that too little attention is paid to this state. I know it is an easy matter to grumble and find fault, -- but where it is so universal it cannot be passed over with impunity.

    Respectfully & Truly Yours

    O. M. Hatch
