CHEMUNG COUNTY, situated on the south boundary of New York, and watered by Chemung river, Cayuta, and Newtown creeks, Seneca lake inlet, and Chemung canal. Area, 530 square miles. Seat of justice, Elmira. Pop. in 1840, 20,732; in 1850, 28,795. (Fanning's, 1853)
