John Brown appeared in court on a stretcher before Judge Parker in Charlestown, Virginia for the first time this day. The charges against him were murder, conspiring to free slaves, and treason against the state of Virginia. His trial began two days later and lasted five days. He was found guilty and hanged December 2, 1859. (By John Osborne)
