CHATHAM COUNTY, situated at the eastern angle of Georgia, on the Atlantic ocean, between Ogeechee and Savannah rivers. Area, 405 square miles. Face of the country level; soil in general sandy, or marshy, but in some parts fertile. Seat of justice, Savannah. Pop. in 1820, 14,737; in 1830, 14,230; in 1840, 18,801; in 1850, 23,901.
