Georges-Eugène Haussmann assumes the post of Prefect of the Seine in Paris

At a ceremony held by French emperor Napoleon III, Georges-Eugène Haussmann assumes the post of Prefect of the Seine.  In the next decade, Haussmann will direct a massive campaign to renovate the central districts of Paris. (By Brian Bockelman)
