WILKES COUNTY, situated in the northwest part of North Carolina, and traversed by Yadkin river. Area, 864 square miles. Face of the country, uneven and mountainous; soil, fertile. Seat of justice, Wilkesborough. Pop. in 1820, 9,967; in 1830, 11,942; in 1830, 12,577; in 1850, 12,099. (Fanning's, 1853)
