Nicholas Fabre Geffrard is sworn in a President of Haiti

After a successful insurrection against Faustin Elie Souloque, the self-styled Emperor Faustin I, who had ruled since 1849, Nicholas Fabre Geffrard was sworn in a president of Haiti. He ruled until his exile in 1867. (By John Osborne)
