Aaron Venable Brown of Tennessee, the sitting United States Postmaster-General in the Buchanan Cabinet, died on this day in Washington, DC. He was a former Governor of Tennessee, law partner of James K. Polk, and had been appointed to the Cabinet in 1852 as reward for his years of loyal Democratic service.
