IF A REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT — WHAT THEN FOR THE SOUTH? – The Hon. John McQueen, a Democratic member of Congress from South Carolina, in a recently published letter foreshadows as follows the action of the Southern wing of the Democracy, in the event of the Republican party electing its nominee to the Presidency:

It is not for me to prescribe, at this time, the precise mode of our redress, in the event of the election of a Black Republican, in 1860; all I will say is, that the result will be known in November of that year, and the inauguration would not take place till March, 1861; within those four months, it will be the duty of the Southern States to confer together and act promptly, and never submit to the quiet surrender of the sword, the purse, and the navy to our vilest enemies.
