Gas lighting introduced in Hawaii

Gas lamps were illuminated for the first time on the streets of Honolulu courtesy of the Honolulu Gas Company.  Growth was difficult at first and gas mains spread only slowly over the following decades from the city's business district.  (By John Osborne)
