New governor of Mississippi is inaugurated in Jackson and calls for a convention of southern states

John Jones Pettus, the victorious extreme states rights candidate of the Democratic Party was inaugurated this day as Governor of Mississippi in Jackson.  Pettus, who had received three quarters of the votes cast, proposed in his inaugural speech a convention of all southern states to discuss the future course of resistance to federal inroads into state sovereignty.  To this meeting Mississippi, he said, would send its "truest and best men."  (By John Osborne)
