A heavy earthquake strikes San Salvador in Central America

An severe earthquake shook the Salvadorian capital of San Salvador just before nine o'clock in the evening and lasted for two minutes and 35 seconds. More than forty houses in the city were destroyed but there were no human casualties. The quake was felt in surrounding towns, including Guatepeque, Tepocoya, Opico, and Nanhuisalco, where a fire broke out and destroyed more than two hundred houses. (By John Osborne)
