Ateneo de Manila University is founded in the Philippines

The Ateneo de Manila University was founded when the city of Manila handed over a municipal school to the Society of Jesus, recently returned to the Philippines after a long absence.  When the United States took control of the islands in 1900, the institution was severed from its government support and became a private Jesuit institution.  It remains as a Catholic university today.  (By John Osborne)
