The country is rapidly dividing into two camps, and both sides are arming; and while the enemies of Republican government are keen for the strifes that is to rend the Union sunder, tens of thousands of American patriots are deaf and blind to its awful consequences. – Atlas
The Atlas’s contortions reminds us of the sea-sick footman, described by “Chawls Yellow-plush,” who, at every roll of the ship, ejaculated, “There, now we’re going down!” “Lud ha’ mercy on us –, now we are goin’!” and found dismal corroboration in the fact that he had inwardly felt a “sinking sensation” all day.
No doubt the flunky of the Slaveholders does feel a “sinking sensation.” The Union is not “going down,” but the Democratic Party is! The ship of State will hold together; it is only the Democratic Party that is going to pieces.
