CHEROKEE COUNTY, situated at the extreme westerly angle of North Carolina. Area, 1,000 square miles. Face of the country generally mountainous and hilly, with a fertile soil along the stream. Seat of justice, Murphy. Pop. in 1840, 3,427; in 1850, 6,838. (Fanning's, 1853)
