Dutch troops take and destroy Watapone, the capital of the Celebes in Indonesia
Dutch troops under General van Swieten, aided by troops of the pretender to the throne of the island, culminate their swift campaign to subdue Celebes --Sulawesi in present day Indonesia -- with the capture and destruction the inland capital of Watapone. The ruling dynasty was then deposed and the pretender, Aru Palakka, installed on the throne. (By John Osborne)
