John Hanning Speke and James Augustus Grant, two British explorers, left England by steamship for Africa where they sought to confirm the source of the Nile. This was Speke's second exploration for this purpose, having been Richard Burton's second in command on a recent endeavor. After reaching Zanzibar, Speke and Grant began their trek into the interior in October 1860. They were not to return to England until 1863, claiming to have discovered undeniably the Nile's source.
