Phoebe Ann Moses was born the fifth of six girls to a poor Quaker farming family in Darke County, Ohio. Growing up in grinding poverty she began hunting to feed her family. By the time she was fifteen her remarkable talent as a sharpshooter had been recognized and she joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1885. She continued to set shooting records into her sixties.
