In New York City, an East Side fire burns for six hours and destroys twenty-five buildings

Around noon, in a summer of such incidents, another disastrous fire struck New York City, this time in the Ninth Ward, in Charles Alley of Washington Street on the West Side near the docks.  Beginning in an ironworks, the fire destroyed a significant portion of the block, completely burning down twenty-five buildings.  The blaze was not fully extinguished until after six o'clock and several firemen were injured, two seriously.  (By John Osborne)
