Brunel's giant British commercial vessel Great Eastern had left New York for Halifax, Nova Scotia and home after a lengthy first visit to the east coast of the United States on August 16, 1860. The vessel had caused a sensation wherever it went but the trip confirmed the sad fact that the costs of running the massive ship would preclude it ever being economically viable. She arrived at Milford Haven with only 357 paying passengers aboard. (By John Osborne)
