An estimated 20,000 people were at the Putnam Ground in Brooklyn to watch a baseball game between the two leading clubs in the area, the Atlantic and the Excelsior. After six innings of a well contested game with the Excelsior leading 8-6, elements in the crowd supporting the Atlantic club grew so disruptive that the captains agreed to discontinue and declare the meeting a draw.
