On their march up the Calabrian coast, Garibaldi and his men took the town of Monteleone on August 27, 1860 then pursued the town's fleeing 10,000 strong royal garrison into the mountains. Bourbon General Ghio surrendered his dispirited and trapped force without a fight near the mountain village of Soveria-Mannelli around noon on this day. Garibaldi entered Naples on September 7, 1860.
