New York Police round up hundreds of street beggars throughout the city

At 11 a.m., the New York City Police Department launched an all-out effort to clear the city of beggars and street hustlers.  By the evening, every precinct was reporting multiple arrests and the city courts were filled.  The Third Ward led the arrest numbers with eighty three, followed by the Seventeenth Ward with sixty-one.  All precincts reported a total of 486 arrests for the day.  (By John Osborne)
