Severe gales pound the north-east coast of England and Scotland

Around the British Isles, heavy autumn gales struck the North Sea and north-east Scotland.  Buildings were damaged in Edinburgh and coastal shipping and fishing fleets suffered heavy damage and loss of life from Aberdeen to Newcastle. (By John Osborne)
