Florida statewide elections resulted in victory for Georgia-born Breckinridge Democrat John Milton as governor over Constitutional Unionist Edward Hopkins. The results indicated that the Breckinridge ticket would carry the state in the general election. Milton was sworn in a week later and served in that office for the entire Civil War. Rather than submit to reunion in April 1865, Milton shot himself at his home and is buried in Marianna, Florida. (By John Osborne)
