Original caption
Group on the grounds of Carlisle Barracks c. 1867. Gen. John P. Hatch is shown posing with a group following a croquet game, evidenced by the ball and mallets on the ground at the lower right. On the left, a group of lieutenants is playing cards with a female companion. The officer seated in the center wearing the sash is the Officer of the Day. Barracks 3 is in the background. A cistern is seen behind the Napoleon gun at left as a flat, circular spot on the ground. The cannons represent three of the four guns housed in the cannon houses located out of frame to the left.
