SOLDIERS FROZEN TO DEATH. – A new motive is given to the people at home to work for the soldiers, and to give money or any thing else for their comfort and safety, in the fact that one of those soldiers – the gallant defenders of their country – was actually frozen to death on the cold night of last week. If this dreadful casualty has occurred thus early in the season, what may we not fear in the course of the long winter which is to follow, with its bleak and bitter days and night, and to men exposed to it all without proper and sufficient clothing! How can we do too much for men thus devoting themselves to our safety and the liberty of their country.
By the way, we have on hand, on every publication day, more lists of contributions than we can conveniently publish, and are consequently obliged to postpone some them; but they shall all have a place. As we have heretofore stated, these lists give us a good deal of trouble, and take the space which might be occupied by matter of more general interest; yet we do not by any means grudge that space for they serve as a constant reminder to every reader of the duty to do all he can in the cause. Nothing is more likely to accomplish this than to have before us the evidences that others are so doing. But for this consideration we would long ago have excluded such lists by charging for their publication, as some other papers do which take a different view of the subject.
