Thirty-five people drown when Canadian mail steamer strikes ice and sinks off the coast of Labrador
The Liverpool and Montreal Steam Navigation Company mail steamer Canadian had left Quebec three days before it struck an ice field in the Straights of Belleisle between Newfoundland and Labrador. The iron ship sank in half an hour and the 97 crew and 112 passengers took to lifeboats. Ships in the vicinity were able to rescue survivors and transport them to St. Johns but thirty-five people were lost. (By John Osborne)
