James Naismith, inventor of basketball, is born in northern Ontario the son of Scottish immigrants

Jaimes Naismith was born in Altmonte, Ontario, the second of the three children of Scottish immigrants.  He lost both his parents to typhoid when he was nine but grew up to graduate from McGill University with a degree in Physical Education in 1880.  He is largely credited with inventing the game of basketball while teaching at Springfield College in Massachusetts, then called the International YMCA Training School. In later years, he taught for several decades at the University of Kansas.  He died in Lawrence, Kansas in November 1939. (By John Osborne)
