Kansas Volunteers burn the western Missouri towns of Papinsville and Butler in Bates County

The small town of Papinsville in Bates County, Missouri was attacked and burned by elements of the Third Kansas Volunteers commanded by Major H.H. Williams who carried off suppies and freed slaves. Another detachment fired much of the neighboring town of Butler.  Both towns had changed hands several times as the Confederates of General Sterling Price and Union General James Henry Lane's Kansas Brigade and suffered a fate typical of the brutal and confused local fighting along the Kansas-Missouri border.
