In order to calm disputes on the east coast of Africa between Oman and Zanzibar that threatened to disrupt the region, Britain and France competed a treaty agreement that declared Zanzibar a sovereign nation, under the rule of Sultan Majid, seperate from Oman but with a reinstatement of the annual tribute from Zanzibar to its more powerful neighbor.
