Major General T.J. Jackson commanded of a force covering the Confederate withdrawal from the Shenadoah Valley to protect Richmond against the upcoming Union offensive. On faulty intelligence he began a series of gruelling marches towards Winchester, Virginia to engage what he thought was a smaller Union force under Brigadier General Shields. After three days of marching and skirmishing, he met a larger Union concentration at the first battle of Kernstown on March 23, 1862 and was driven from the field, his only defeat ot the war.
